For the first time in five years the winter rain levels are up in Israel. While there is a long way to go before the deficit is significantly reduced, this is a positive report. The Israeli Water Authority said in a recent report that the rainfall in the northern part of the country was about average, while the numbers were still below average in the southern portions. However, since the rainfall levels were all well below average the past four years, this is encouraging. With the deficit still at a very high level, strict water conservation efforts still being enforced and expected to remain in effect for at least three years. The opening of desalination plants are hoping to make a difference in the future water needs, however they will not all be operating until sometime in 2013. (Various news sources) |
